Self care is not selfish

Self care is taking care of yourself, body and mind so that you can do the things you need to do with joy. Before we get into it let us clear the air about self care not being a self indulgent, selfish pursuit. Self care is doing a few things everyday that help you maintain your emotional, spiritual and physical center so that you can take what life throws at you and help those you love do the same.

You know how superman had to soak in the sun (psst: self care) to do the great things he did. If you were to be superman/woman what would be that source of strength for you?

6 simple ways to make self care a way of life

Prioritise your health

Eating healthy food at the right time and in the right quantity, taking in sunshine, exercising, sleeping well, not smoking, and all the other things that involve caring for your physical health. Regular dental and medical check ups included.

Make time to do things you love

Most of us can’t afford to do what we love for a living, but we can find time to do them often enough to keep our spirits high. Think of activities that bring you peace. Is it cooking? Is it getting a pedicure after a hike? Or just sitting back in a comfy chair with a book? Or daydreaming with your favorite music on? If you are finding it hard to answer this question, then maybe you haven’t put yourself first before. Think of it as a way to be a better, happier you for yourself and your loved ones.

Avoid negative people & situations

Steering clear of situations that make you feel drained and people who pull you down is about being self aware and prioritising your own wellbeing. For example, if you had a hurtful breakup then skipping a party where your ex might come with his new partner is a good idea. Another example is, if despite your best efforts your supervisor focuses only on what wasn’t done well which can be extremely demotivating, it might be time to look for a team or job change.

We don’t mean that you should turn away from difficult situations, instead that you should build your emotional reserve so that you can problem solve when they occur. Don’t waste your energy, your mind space and your happiness on unnecessary avoidable situations.

Nurture your close friendships and relationships

The science on this is clear - having good quality relationships throughout your life is as good or a better predictor of physical and emotional health as your blood sugar levels. Spending time with friends has immediate health benefits like reduction of stress and anxiety, as well as long term health benefits like reduced risk of heart disease. There are ways to maintain long distance friendships too, so if you prioritize your health you’ll put your friends on the list too.

Be kind to yourself and be grateful for the good things in your life

Kindness towards yourself and gratitude for all that you have  are the foundation stones of a happy you. Whenever you feel angry with yourself and say disparaging things about yourself, think back at the time when you were a child - would you want that little one to be treated this way? It is you, be kind to yourself.

Practicing gratitude by taking out time to think of 1 to 3 things that make your life beautiful, is the golden ‘good life hack’.
